Obelisk #138, was the part of the "original" border marking system, as authorized by Congress following the Gadsden Purchase. Just as the Iron Curtain was built entirely on Communist land, the current border fence in actually offset from the true border by a matter of feet. The result: this marker sits on the "Mexican" side of the fence, and is inaccessible from the USA.
